MELAWAN STEREOTIPE BUMIPUTRA TERHADAP BELANDA DALAM NOVEL HELEN DAN SUKANTA KARYA PIDI

Stereotypes, which are interpreted as a view of a certain group towards another group that is generalised and tends to be negative, can create inequality, violence, oppression, and others. This can occur not only in the colonising group, but also in the colonised group. In the novel Helen and Sukanta, this stereotype is clearly represented, but there is still something else that remains and has not been discussed by previous studies, namely the correlation between stereotypes and the portrayal of Helen's character in the novel. To explore this, Homi K. Bhabha's stereotype theory was used as an analytical tool, which resulted in the following findings. Dutch stereotypes of the Bumiputra appear quite sharply in the novel, ranging from mocking nicknames, images of violence, oppression, and discrimination to the hegemony that occurs causing the Bumiputra to feel everything is natural and normal. Further stereotyping of the natives towards the Dutch is shown in the events of the preparation period and the repatriation of the Dutch to their home country. Helen's partiality towards the Natives and her opinions against colonialism illustrate the existence of good individuals amongst the colonisers so that stereotypes are not justified. Therefore, this novel attempts to counter the stereotypes that have crystallised to this day in Indonesian society
