Austronesian Languages, Banyumasan Javanese, Patani Malay, Phonological Comparison, Dili TetunAbstract
This study aims to describe the phonemic correspondence of words that have similarities in Banyumasan Javanese, Tetun Dili, and Patani Malay as part of the Austronesian language family. This study also attempts to describe the comparison in the phonological level of Banyumasan Javanese, Dili Tetun and Patani Malay. This study was conducted based on the theory of comparative linguistics which is needed to compare the three languages. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative with reference to 200 Swadesh vocabularies. The phonemic correspondence patterns obtained from the comparative analysis of the three languages show that there are a total of four phonemic correspondence patterns between Banyumasan Javanese and Dili Tetun, namely /ᴓ ~ n/, /w ~ f/, /? ~ n/, and /i ~ e/; and a total of seven phonemic correspondence patterns between Banyumasan Javanese and Patani Malay, namely /w ~ b/, /n ~ æ/, /k ~ ?/, /t ~ ?/, /s ~ h/, /? ~ ᴐ/, and /u ~ o/. This study also indicates that the three languages share some phonological features that are characteristic of the Austronesian language family.
