Analysis of person deixis in the BBC Sport news articles

This study examines the role of person deixis in BBC Sport golf news fragments, focusing on how it impacts text coherence and information delivery in sports writing. Person deixis, including pronouns referring to individuals, is crucial for simplifying information and increasing reader engagement. Using Huang’s (2014) pragmatic theory, the research highlights that deixis extends beyond its grammatical role, playing a significant part in pragmatics by shaping reader assumptions. The findings reveal 672 instances of deixis, with person and number types accounting for the majority (34.4%), followed by gender types (31.2%). The study concludes that the strategic use of deictic expressions not only improves communication but also fosters a closer connection with the reader, essential in dynamic reporting. The research suggests that understanding deixis enhances clarity and engagement in writing across various contexts, not just sports journalism.
