Abstract

This study examines the use of inflectional affixes in the lyrics of songs by Day6, Taylor Swift, (G)I-dle, and Alice Shone. Using a descriptive qualitative research method, the analysis focuses on a range of inflections including third-person singular present, past tense, present progressive, past participle, plural, possessive, comparative, and superlative forms. The study identified a total of 83 occurrences of these inflectional affixes across the albums of the selected artists. These occurrences were categorized into different linguistic features, with the most frequent being past tense (20 occurrences), followed by present progressive (19 occurrences), plural (18 occurrences), past participle (15 occurrences), possessive (6 occurrences), third-person singular present (3 occurrences), comparative (2 occurrences), and superlative (1 occurrence). The findings indicate that past tense inflections are the most prevalent in the lyrics, suggesting their significant role in the linguistic characteristics of songs by Day6, Taylor Swift, (G)I-dle, and Alice Shone. This study contributes to our understanding of how inflectional affixes influence the linguistic nuances and stylistic choices in contemporary music lyrics.
